Meet Our New Nutrition Coach – Mariah

Meet the Coach:

1. Tell us a little about yourself outside of the gym.
Outside of the gym, I’m a wife and mom of three, with another little one on the way, and we recently moved to North Carolina. I love being outdoors, spending time with my family, cooking, and homeschooling my kids. Family & faith are a huge part of my life, and I think that has shaped the way I look at health, it has to fit into real life, not take over your life. We only get one body, and as a Believer, it’s important to me to be able to be strong and healthy to do what I am called to do.

2. How did you get interested in nutrition?
My interest in nutrition really grew out of my own health and fitness journey. I started realizing that what we eat affects so much more than the number on the scale, our energy, performance, recovery, mood, and how we feel day to day. The more I learned, the more passionate I became about helping people understand nutrition without making it complicated or overwhelming.

Also, as a mother, I want to help my children understand nutrition as well. I grew up an athlete, as did my husband, and played college softball. I was never educated in nutrition, how it helps, or why it’s even important. I truly believe that I could have been a whole lot better if that was something that was taught to me.

3. What brought you to Fit Lab?
I was drawn to Fit Lab because it feels like a community rather than just a gym. I love that there is an emphasis on getting stronger, becoming healthier, and supporting people wherever they are in their journey. It felt like the kind of environment where nutrition coaching could complement what members are already doing in the gym.

4. What made you want to become a nutrition coach?
I’ve seen how easy it is for people to get caught in the cycle of dieting, restricting, falling off, and starting over. I want to help people step out of that cycle and learn how to actually nourish their bodies in a way they can maintain. I love helping people take something that feels overwhelming and make it simple, practical, and doable.

Your Nutrition Philosophy

5. What do you believe is the biggest misconception people have about nutrition?
That you have to eat perfectly to make progress. People often think they need to cut out entire food groups, follow a perfect meal plan, or drastically reduce calories. In reality, consistency with the basics; adequate protein, whole and nutrient-dense foods, hydration, appropriate portions, and enough food to support your activity, can make a huge difference.

6. What’s one nutrition habit you think makes the biggest difference for most people?
Prioritizing protein at each meal. It helps with satiety, muscle recovery and growth, maintaining lean muscle, and making meals more satisfying. It’s also a simple habit that can have a ripple effect on the rest of someone’s nutrition.

7. How do you approach nutrition without making people feel like they’re “on a diet”?
I focus on education and habits rather than restriction. Instead of giving someone a long list of foods they can and can’t eat, I want them to understand how to build balanced meals, recognize what their body needs, and make choices that support their goals. There is room for the foods you love; nutrition shouldn’t feel like punishment.

8. What does a healthy, sustainable approach to nutrition look like to you?
It looks different for everyone, but at its core it means eating enough to support your body and your goals, prioritizing nutrient-dense foods, getting adequate protein and hydration, and having flexibility. A sustainable approach is one you can still follow six months or two years from now. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about building habits you can return to over and over again.

9. How do you balance nutrition for performance with nutrition for everyday life?
I think performance nutrition and everyday nutrition should work together, not compete with each other. We want enough food, protein, carbohydrates, fluids, and micronutrients to support training and recovery, while still being able to enjoy dinner with your family, go on vacation, or have a meal out. Your nutrition should support your life—not prevent you from living it.

Working With Members

10. Who do you think benefits most from nutrition coaching?
Honestly, anyone who feels like they know what they “should” be doing but can’t seem to make it consistent. You don’t have to be trying to lose weight to benefit from coaching. Whether your goal is fat loss, muscle gain, improved performance, better energy, or simply feeling more confident around food, having someone help you create a realistic plan can make a huge difference.

11. What can someone expect when they start working with you?
They can expect individualized guidance, accountability, education, and a judgment-free environment. I want to understand their goals, lifestyle, preferences, challenges, and current habits before trying to change everything at once. We’ll focus on realistic changes that build on each other over time.

12. What’s something you want members to understand before they start nutrition coaching?
You don’t need to be perfect, and you don’t need to have everything figured out before you start. My job isn’t to judge what you’re currently doing, it’s to meet you where you are and help you figure out what comes next. Progress comes from consistency, not perfection.

13. How do you help someone who knows what they “should” be doing but struggles to actually do it consistently?
We figure out what’s actually getting in the way. Sometimes the problem isn’t knowledge, it’s that the plan doesn’t fit their schedule, they’re trying to change too much at once, they aren’t eating enough, or they don’t have a system in place. We’ll simplify the goal, create practical strategies, and build habits that fit their actual life.

14. What are some of the things you can help members with?
I can help with fat loss, muscle gain, body composition, protein intake, meal planning, balanced meals, hydration, nutrition for training and recovery, grocery planning, eating out, consistency, building sustainable habits, and developing a healthier relationship with food.

15. What’s one small nutrition change someone could make this week that would have a positive impact?
Start by adding protein to breakfast. Instead of thinking about everything you need to change, focus on one simple habit. Eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, a protein smoothie, or another protein-rich option can help create a more satisfying and balanced start to the day.

Fit Lab & Community

16. What do you love about the Fit Lab community?
I love that people genuinely encourage each other. There are people at so many different stages and ability levels, but everyone is working toward becoming a stronger and healthier version of themselves. There’s a sense that you’re not doing this alone.

17. How do you think nutrition and training work together?
Training gives your body a reason to adapt, and nutrition gives it the tools to do that. You can work incredibly hard in the gym, but if you’re consistently under-fueling, under-hydrating, or not getting enough protein, you’re making recovery and progress harder than they need to be. The two work best together.

18. What are you most excited about bringing to Fit Lab?
I’m excited to make nutrition feel approachable. I want members to leave coaching feeling more confident about food, not more afraid of it. I’m especially excited to help people realize that they don’t need another extreme diet; they need a strategy that fits their life and supports the work they’re already putting in at Fit Lab.

19. What does “The Fit Lab Way” mean to you when it comes to nutrition?
To me, “The Fit Lab Way” means taking a long-term approach. It’s about getting stronger, taking care of your body, and building habits that support the life you actually want to live. Nutrition isn’t about chasing perfection or a temporary result. It’s about learning how to fuel yourself well, consistently, so you can keep showing up, for your training, your family, your work, and your life.

Spread the love!
